Heart symbol

language culture Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The heart symbol is a very famous shape. It has two curves that meet at a point. This shape is not a real heart from our bodies. Instead, it is an ideograph, which is a symbol that stands for an idea. Most people use it to show deep feelings like affection or love. It is often colored red to show romantic love. Sometimes, people add other details to it. A heart with an arrow might show lovesickness. A heart broken into pieces shows heartbreak.

This shape has many different uses in history. In ancient Japan, people called the symbol Inome. This name means the eye of a wild boar. People believed it could ward off evil spirits. They used this pattern to decorate Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. They also put it on castles and weapons. The oldest examples are found on sword guards called tsuba. These were made between the sixth and seventh centuries.

In Europe, the symbol changed a lot over time. Before the 14th century, it did not mean a human heart. Instead, it often looked like plant leaves. People used shapes like fig leaves or ivy leaves. In the 1300s, the shape began to look more like the heart we know. It started to have a dent at the bottom. By the 1500s, the symbol became very popular in Europe. You can even see heart shapes on playing cards from the late 15th century.

Artists have used the heart in many ways. A painter named Giotto made a famous painting in 1305. In it, a figure named Charity hands her heart to Jesus Christ. During this time, the heart was often drawn pointing upward. It looked more like a pine cone than a modern heart. Later, the shape changed so the point faced downward. This is the way we usually see it today.
