This book is very important to literature. It helped start a whole new genre of horror stories. Many films and plays are based on her ideas. People often use the name "Frankenstein" to mean the monster itself.

The story shows a very difficult journey for the characters. Victor assembles his creature using parts from graves and charnel houses. When the creature first wakes up, Victor feels terrible horror. He flees from his creation in fear. The creature then wanders into the world alone. It finds a small shelter near a human family. By watching them, the creature learns how to speak and write. It even reads books like *Paradise Lost* by John Milton.

Mary Shelley had a very interesting life that influenced her writing. She was born to famous writers. Her mother was Mary Wollstonecraft and her father was William Godwin.

She grew up around many important thinkers and writers. This helped her become an author at a young age. She met Percy Bysshe Shelley when she was sixteen. They eventually married and traveled through Europe together. Shelley faced much sadness in her own life. She lost her mother and her first child. These experiences of loss and guilt are found in her story.

The book has a very famous origin story. In the summer of 1816, Mary was staying in Switzerland. This year was known as the "Year Without a Summer." A volcano called Mount Tambora had caused very cold, dark weather.

Because of the rain, Mary and her friends stayed indoors. They were with Lord Byron and John Polidori. Byron suggested they all try writing a ghost story. Mary thought about a scientist who creates life. She felt horrified by what he had made. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818. She was only twenty years old at that time.

Many things in the book connect to the real world of that time. People were talking a lot about electricity and science. Some scientists, like Luigi Galvani, studied how electricity affects living things. This idea is called Galvanism.

Shelley's characters also talk about these scientific ideas. The book also connects to older stories about gods and heroes. The subtitle refers to Prometheus, a figure from ancient myths. The themes of the book link to the Romantic movement. This movement focused on deep feelings and the power of nature. Even today, the book remains a huge part of our culture.
