When the creature wakes up, Victor feels great fear. He runs away from his own creation. The creature also runs away into the world. It learns how to speak and read by watching a family. But people are often scared of its look. This causes much sadness and anger.

Mary Shelley wrote this during a very cold summer in Switzerland. The weather was dark and rainy for a long time. She was with her lover, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and Lord Byron. They were all trying to write ghost stories. The book is now a very important part of literature. It helped start a whole new kind of horror story. Many movies and plays are based on her ideas. Even today, people often call the monster "Frankenstein."
