She was a pioneer of the Gothic novel. These are stories filled with suspense and mystery. Her books often had strange events. They seemed like magic or ghosts. However, she usually gave a logical reason for these events. This was her special way of writing. It was called the "explained supernatural."

Radcliffe was a very shy person. She lived a quiet life. She did not want to be famous in public. People often only knew her name from her books.

She was very successful. Her book, *The Mysteries of Udolpho*, was a huge hit. She became one of the highest-paid writers of her time. Her work inspired many other famous authors. These included Jane Austen and Mary Shelley.

Her style of storytelling was called the "Radcliffe school." She believed in using "terror" to excite the mind. She did not like "horror" that was too violent. She wanted her stories to expand the soul.
