She is best known for starting the Gothic novel style. These stories use suspense, mystery, and exotic historical settings. Her books often include events that seem like magic or ghosts. This is what people call the supernatural. Radcliffe was a very shy and private person. She lived a quiet life away from the public eye. Many people only knew her name from the title pages of her books.

Radcliffe had a very special way of writing her stories. She used a method called the "explained supernatural." This means she would include scary or ghostly events to build suspense. However, she would later give a logical reason for them. She wanted to show that these events had real explanations. She made a big distinction between "terror" and "horror." To her, terror expands the soul and wakes up the mind. She felt that horror was too violent and made the soul feel small.
