The Great Game was a long rivalry between two huge empires. These were the British and Russian Empires during the 1800s. They both wanted more influence in Central Asia. They focused on places like Afghanistan, Persia, and Tibet.

This rivalry was not a single war. Instead, it was a contest of politics and maps. Both sides used soldiers and deals to grow their power. They wanted to control the lands between them.

This competition worked through many different steps. Britain wanted to protect its land in India. They feared Russia would move south to attack it. Russia wanted to expand its territory into Central Asia.

To stay safe, Britain tried to create buffer states. These were lands that sat between the two empires. They supported places like Persia and Bukhara to block Russia. Britain also wanted to protect sea trade routes. They used steam power and rivers like the Indus to reach far away.

The rivalry began with many early tensions. In 1801, Tsar Paul I of Russia planned a march to India. He told General Vasily Petrovich Orlov to conquer the Central Asian Khanates. This plan ended when the Tsar died that same year.

Later, Russia fought wars in Persia during 1804 and 1826. These wars changed how much power Persia had. Britain sent its own people to map the area secretly. One man, Captain Arthur Conolly, coined the term "The Great Game" in 1840. He saw it as a noble but risky game.

Many specific names and dates define this era. On 12 January 1830, Lord Ellenborough gave a task to Lord Bentinck. They wanted to find a trade route to the Emirate of Bukhara.

Russia also had different plans, like the Duhamel and Khrulev plans. These plans for India never actually happened. The British used many experts to study the land. One famous surveyor was Nain Singh Rawat. He helped the British understand the geography of the region.

Eventually, the two empires found ways to stop the tension. They began to use diplomacy to set clear borders. In September 1895, they signed the Pamir Boundary Commission protocols. This helped define the border of Afghanistan.

Finally, in August 1907, they signed the Anglo-Russian Convention. This created an alliance between Britain and Russia. It set clear rules for control in Tibet and Persia. This helped end the period of the Great Game.
