Qajar Iran was a powerful state that lasted from 1789 to 1925.

It was ruled by the Qajar dynasty, a group of people from a Turkic tribe. This era is important because it helped shape the modern identity of Iran. During this time, the Persian language and Shia Islam became very important to the nation. The land was often called the Guarded Domains of Iran. This name showed that the country felt like one unified place. It was a time of great change and many difficult choices.

The story of the Qajars began with a leader named Agha Mohammad Khan. He was a chieftain of the Qajar tribe from northern Iran. After a leader named Karim Khan Zand died in 1779, there was a struggle for power. Agha Mohammad Khan fought his rivals to bring the different lands together. He was officially crowned as the Shah, or king, in 1796.

He made Tehran his capital city. Even though he was killed the next year, his nephew Fath-Ali Shah took his place.

As the years passed, the Qajar leaders faced hard jobs from big foreign empires. The Russian Empire and the British Empire both wanted more control in the region. In the early 1800s, Russia took land in the Caucasus from the Qajars. This included places like modern-day Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.

In 1907, Britain and Russia made a deal called the Anglo-Russian Convention. This deal divided Iran into zones where each empire had influence. This made it very hard for the Iranian government to rule on its own.

In the early 20th century, many people in Iran wanted a new way to govern. They started the Persian Constitutional Revolution to create a parliament called the Majles.

They wanted a system where laws were made by elected people. This led to Ahmad Shah Qajar becoming the leader instead of Mohammad Ali Shah. However, the Russian Empire stepped in to stop many of these new rules. The country also faced more trouble during World War I and attacks from the Ottoman Empire.

Eventually, the long rule of the Qajars came to an end. In 1921, a military coup changed the leadership in the country. Four years later, in 1925, a military officer named Reza Shah took power.

His rise marked the start of the Pahlavi dynasty. This was the last royal family to rule Iran. The history of the Qajars shows how a tribe became a great dynasty. It also shows how a nation works to stay independent during big global changes.
