For a long time, this land was part of the Chinese-Korean-Manchu world. In the 1600s, the Russian Empire began to move toward the Pacific coast. They wanted to find new paths and make contact with China.

This led to many years of changes along the border. Many people lived and worked in these lands.

Russia used several steps to gain control of the land. First, explorers like Gennady Nevelskoy mapped the coast and the Amur River. Nevelskoy proved that Sakhalin was an island.

Next, the Russian government sent settlers and built forts. They also moved their naval centers to better defend the area. Finally, they used treaties to change the official borders. These deals were often made while China was busy with other wars.

This history began with many early explorers and leaders. In 1689, the Treaty of Nerchinsk set a stable border for a long time. Later, in 1847, Nikolay Muravyov became the Governor-General of East Siberia. He was a key leader in the Russian push toward the Amur.

He even earned the title "Amursky" from the Czar. Other men like Admiral Putyatin and Ignatyev also played big roles. They traveled far to talk with Chinese officials.

Many specific dates and names define this era. In 1858, Muravyov signed the Treaty of Aigun with an official named Yishan. This treaty gave land north of the Amur to Russia. However, the Qing government in Beijing refused to accept it. Two years later, the Convention of Peking was signed in 1860. This new deal gave Russia the Pacific coast and Sakhalin island. These lands are now known as Amur Oblast and Primorsky Krai.

Today, we can see these changes on modern maps. The area is often called Outer Manchuria. It is a large part of the greater Manchuria region.
