It sits right where the Amur and Ussuri rivers meet. This location is very important because it is near the large Russian city of Khabarovsk. The island is surrounded by many smaller pieces of land. It is bounded by Yinlong Island and over 90 small islets. Because it sits by these big rivers, it has great strategic value.

For a long time, China and Russia had a disagreement about who owned the island. This was called a territorial dispute. China claimed the island was part of Fuyuan County in Heilongjiang. Russia governed it as part of Khabarovsk Krai. In 1929, the Soviet Union took control of the islands after a conflict. This was not accepted by China at that time. The two countries had different interests in the land. Russia wanted to keep the waterways for its ships.

Eventually, the two nations worked together to find a peaceful way to settle the matter. They signed a special agreement in 2004. This was called the Complementary Agreement. In 2005, the leaders of both countries approved the plan. Finally, the border was finished in Beijing in July 2008. Under this deal, Russia gave about 174 square kilometers to China.

This transfer happened on 14 October 2008. China also gained the right to sail ships along the main channel of the Amur River.

Today, the island is split between the two countries. The area given to China is mostly empty of people. It is located in the Fuyuan district of Heilongjiang province. The part kept by Russia is in the Khabarovsky District.

Even though the border is settled, some people still have strong feelings. Some people in Khabarovsk protested the loss of land. In 2023, a Chinese map showed the whole island as part of China. This caused more debate between the nations.

Despite these human arguments, the island is a beautiful home for nature. In 2015, China made it a nature reserve to protect living things.

There are 505 different kinds of plants growing there. You can also find 351 different kinds of animals. Some of these are very special and protected by the nation. The famous Siberian tiger lives on the island. There is even a special park made just for black bears.
