A Russian leader named Nikolay Muravyov went to the river. In 1858, he signed the Treaty of Aigun. This deal gave land north of the river to Russia. A Chinese official named Yishan signed it. However, the Chinese government said the deal was not valid. They did not accept it.

Things changed during the Second Opium War. This was a conflict involving Britain and France. A Russian man named Ignatyev helped talk with the Chinese. He worked while the other powers were in the capital city.
