The Amur Annexation refers to the process where the Russian Empire gained control of large territories from the Chinese Qing dynasty. This happened between 1858 and 1860 through the use of unequal treaties. These lands are located around the Amur River, which flows into the Pacific Ocean. This region is often called Outer Manchuria. It includes areas that are known today as Amur Oblast and Primorsky Krai.

The annexation was significant because it changed the borders of Eurasia forever. It moved the Russian frontier much further south toward the Pacific coast.

To understand how this happened, we must look at the geography of the region. The Stanovoy Mountains divide the land into different drainage basins. Rivers to the north flow into the Arctic Ocean. Rivers to the south flow into the Amur River. Some parts of the middle Amur are good for agriculture.

For centuries, this area was part of the Chinese-Korean-Manchu world. However, Russian explorers began reaching the Pacific coast in the 1630s. They wanted to find a way to contact China directly.

The process of annexation involved several specific stages of exploration and military movement. First, explorers like Gennady Nevelskoy mapped the coastline and the Amur. Nevelskoy discovered that Sakhalin was an island, which was a military secret at the time. He also founded the settlement of Nikolayevsk on land claimed by the Qing.

Next, the Russian government began moving people and supplies into the area. Governor-General Nikolay Muravyov created the Transbaikalian Cossacks by arming 20,000 serfs from local mines. This provided a military force to hold the new territory.

Diplomacy played a major role alongside these physical movements. In 1858, Muravyov traveled down the Amur to reach the town of Aigun. He presented the Treaty of Aigun to a local official named Yishan. This treaty ceded all land north of the Amur River to Russia. It also created a condominium, or shared territory, east of the Ussuri River.

However, the Qing government in Beijing refused to recognize this treaty.

The final stage of the annexation occurred during the Second Opium War. This war involved British and French forces fighting against China. Russia used this period of Chinese weakness to its advantage. A major general named Nikolay Pavlovich Ignatyev acted as an intermediary between the Europeans and the Chinese. He helped negotiate the Convention of Peking in 1860.

This agreement ratified the previous deals and expanded Russian control.

Through the Convention of Peking, Russia gained even more land. The treaty gave Russia the entire Pacific coast up to the Korean border. It also gave Russia control over the island of Sakhalin. These changes were finalized on November 14, 1860. Russia achieved these gains through diplomacy and the support of other European powers. Interestingly, the source notes that except for one event at Aigun, Russia did not have to fire a single shot to gain this land.

The history of the Amur Annexation connects to broader themes of empire and global conflict. It shows how the expansion of one empire can be timed with the struggles of another. The movement of the Russian frontier was driven by the need to defend new colonies in Alaska. It was also driven by the desire to find supply routes to the Pacific. This period helped shape the modern political map of Northeast Asia. It remains a key example of how treaties and exploration can reshape the world.
