These were the British and Russian Empires. They fought for influence in Central Asia. They focused on places like Afghanistan, Persia, and Tibet.

Britain wanted to protect India. They feared Russia would move south and attack. Russia wanted to grow its land in Central Asia. This caused a lot of distrust between the two sides.

Some leaders made plans to invade. Tsar Paul I once planned to march to India. This plan ended when he died in 1801. Russia also fought wars in Persia.

They used many ways to gain control. They sent soldiers and made deals. They also sent people to map the land. A man named Arthur Conolly called this "The Great Game."
