The Durand Line is a famous international border.

It sits between the countries of Afghanistan and Pakistan. One end of this line runs near the border with Iran. The other end reaches toward the border with China. This long line separates many different provinces and regions. It divides parts of Pakistan like Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from parts of Afghanistan. Some people also say India has a claim to a border here in the Kashmir region. Because of this, many people call it one of the most dangerous borders in the world.

Making this border was a big job that took many years.

In 1893, a British diplomat named Mortimer Durand met with the Emir of Afghanistan, Abdur Rahman Khan. They wanted to set clear limits for their lands. This would help with trade and make diplomatic relations better. They signed a single-page agreement on 12 November 1893. After that, workers began a survey to mark the line. Between 1894 and 1896, they marked about 800 miles of the boundary. Some parts used mountain ridges to show where the line was.

This area has a very long history of people living there.

Pashtun people have lived in this region since at least 500 BC. A Greek historian named Herodotus even wrote about people called Pactyans living here in the 1st millennium BC. Later, Arab Muslims came to the area in the 7th century. They introduced Islam to the Pashtun people. The Baloch tribes live near the southern end of the line in the Balochistan region. Many different empires, like the Mughals and the Durranis, have ruled over these lands in the past.

History changed how the border works for different countries.

In 1919, a treaty was signed that slightly changed the line. When Pakistan became independent in 1947, it inherited this border from the British. However, the border is still a subject of many arguments. Some leaders in Afghanistan, like Daoud Khan, strongly opposed the line. In 1976, Pakistan's Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto tried to make a deal to recognize it. These talks stopped after leaders in both countries were overthrown.

Today, the Durand Line is still a very important part of the world.

It connects different ways of life and different types of government. While Pakistan sees it as a settled international border, some Pashtun nationalists in Afghanistan do not recognize it. This means the line is not just a mark on a map. It is a place where history, culture, and politics all meet. Understanding this line helps us understand the relationship between these two neighbors.
