This does not always mean there is a formal treaty. Sometimes, a country uses soft power to lead others. However, having high levels of exclusive control can lead to big fights. In extreme cases, a smaller country might even become a satellite state. This means it acts like a helper to the stronger nation.

Many different ways exist for a nation to show its influence. Some countries use military force to control a region. Others use economic power by controlling trade or loans. In the past, some smaller states paid tribute to larger ones. This was a way to keep their own independence.

Even today, many parts of the world share a common culture. This can happen because of an old sphere of influence. Examples include the Arab World or the Francophonie. These groups stay connected through shared history and language.

President James Monroe later made this official. He called it the Monroe Doctrine. This rule said the New World was a U.S. sphere. For a long time, few nations tried to enter this area. Even in 2018, leaders still talked about this old doctrine. They used it to discuss trade with nations like China.

During the late 1800s, many nations competed for control in China. This period is known in China as the century of humiliation.
