Hard power is a way leaders influence others. It uses military strength or money to get results. This type of power is often very aggressive. It works best when one group is much stronger than another. One man named Joseph Nye explains it well. He says it uses "carrots and sticks" to make people follow orders.

There are two ways to use this power. The "carrots" are good things offered to others. A leader might offer an alliance or military protection. They might also lower trade barriers to help a neighbor. The "sticks" are different because they are threats. These include threats of military action or coercive diplomacy. One stick is called an economic sanction. This is a rule that stops trade with a country.

People have used hard power for a long time. However, the specific name came later in history. Joseph Nye created the term "soft power" first. He wanted to show a different way to lead. Soft power uses culture and history instead of force. The "realist school" of thought also looks at power. They believe power comes from real things like land. This includes a nation's people and its natural resources.

We can see hard power in real events. In 2003, the United States used it in Iraq. The George W. Bush administration wanted to stop Saddam Hussein. They also used hard power in the war in Afghanistan. Another example involves the nation of Iran. The UN Security Council and the European Union use sanctions. They stop Iran from trading oil or using banks. These rules try to stop nuclear weapon programs.

Hard power changes how the world works. It can help create a balance of power. It can also change who is in charge of a region. Using sanctions can cause a country's economy to fail. This happened to Iran with its inflation and GDP. This is different from soft power, which is much gentler. Both types of power are used in global politics today.
