The Pathet Lao was a communist political movement in Laos.

This group wanted to change how their country was governed. They eventually gained control over all of Laos in 1975. This happened after a long period known as the Laotian Civil War. The group was closely tied to the communist leaders in North Vietnam. In fact, they were often helped and led by the People's Army of Vietnam. This connection was very important to their growth and success.

The group started from roots in the Second World War. Before they were the Pathet Lao, they were called the Lao Issara. This was a group that wanted to stop French rule in 1945. In 1950, the group changed its name to the Pathet Lao. A leader named Souphanouvong took charge of the movement. He joined with the Viet Minh to fight against French authorities. He spent many years living and working in Vietnam during this time. This helped the group build strong ties with their neighbors.

Fighting in Laos changed depending on the time of year. During the wet season from May to October, the heavy rains made movement hard. The Royal Lao Army often had the advantage during these rainy months. However, the dry season from November to April changed things again. During the dry months, the Pathet Lao and North Vietnamese forces usually dominated. The North Vietnamese also used parts of Laos for a supply path. This path was known as the Ho Chi Minh trail. It helped move men and supplies to South Vietnam.

The Pathet Lao had an army called the Lao People's Liberation Army.

This army grew quite large over the years. It had about 25,000 members in June 1965. By 1970, the number grew to more than 48,000 people. They used a draft to find new members for the army. Some of these young people were as young as 12 years old. The soldiers relied on North Vietnam for their weapons and bullets. Mao Zedong even helped provide 170 million bullets and 920,000 grenades.

Many different agreements were made to try to stop the fighting. In 1954, the Geneva Conference helped set some new rules. In 1962, leaders signed an agreement to keep Laos neutral. These attempts at peace did not last very long. Fighting started again after these agreements failed to work. Finally, the Vientiane Treaty was signed in February 1973. This treaty helped end the involvement of the United States in the war. Shortly after, the Pathet Lao took full control of the nation.
