The Pathet Lao was a communist political movement in Laos. It eventually became the government of the entire country in 1975. This change followed the Laotian Civil War. The group was a communist organization that sought to change how Laos was governed. They were deeply connected to the communist leaders in North Vietnam. In many ways, they functioned as a branch of the Vietnamese movement. This relationship provided them with essential leadership and military resources.

The movement's origins can be traced back to the Second World War. It began as a nationalist group called the Lao Issara in October 1945. This group wanted to end French colonial rule in Laos. In 1950, the movement was renamed the Pathet Lao. This change happened when Souphanouvong took leadership. Souphanouvong was a key figure who joined the Viet Minh revolt. He spent many years living and working in Vietnam. This helped cement the bond between the Laotian and Vietnamese communist forces.

The Pathet Lao operated through various political and military structures. They had a political arm known as the Neo Lao Issara, or the Free Lao Front. Their military force was renamed the Lao People's Liberation Army (LPLA) in 1965. The LPLA was divided into three distinct types of forces. These included regular forces, regional or popular forces, and militia or guerrilla forces. Every unit had political commissars assigned to it. These officers focused on political indoctrination for the soldiers. The movement believed that "fighting will" was the most important source of military strength.

Military operations in Laos were heavily influenced by the seasons. The weather created a natural cycle for the fighting. From May through October, the country experienced a heavy wet season. The rains often immobilized the North Vietnamese and Pathet Lao forces. During these months, the Royal Lao Army (RLA) was usually the dominant force. However, the situation changed during the dry season from November through April. The Pathet Lao and North Vietnamese forces typically dominated during these drier months. This seasonal pattern dictated the rhythm of the civil war.

North Vietnamese support was a major factor in the Pathet Lao's strength. North Vietnam created groups like Group 100 and Group 959 to support the movement. These groups provided training, weapons, and military guidance. A major goal for North Vietnam was securing the Ho Chi Minh trail. This was a transit route through eastern Laos used to move men and supplies to South Vietnam. In 1968, there were an estimated 40,000 North Vietnamese troops in Laos. Of these, 25,000 were focused on defending the supply trail. Only 700 served specifically as advisers to the Pathet Lao.

The scale of military aid to the movement was massive. Under orders from Mao Zedong, the People's Liberation Army provided huge quantities of supplies. This included 115,000 guns and 920,000 grenades. They also provided 170 million bullets. The movement also received training for more than 700 military officers. The LPLA grew significantly in size over time. In June 1965, the LPLA had an estimated 25,000 members. By 1970, that number had grown to over 48,000 personnel.

Peace efforts were attempted several times but often failed. The 1954 Geneva Conference required foreign forces to withdraw from Laos. Later, the 1962 International Agreement on the Neutrality of Laos tried to keep the country out of conflicts. These agreements did not stop the fighting because North Vietnam did not withdraw. Eventually, the Vientiane Treaty was signed in February 1973. This treaty followed the Paris Peace Accords and ended United States involvement in the war. Following these shifts in power, the Pathet Lao achieved full control of Laos in 1975.
