The First Congo War was a major conflict in Africa. It lasted from October 1996 to May 1997.

Many different countries were involved in the fighting. This war changed the leadership of a large nation. It also changed the name of that country. Because so many nations fought, some people call it Africa's First World War. The conflict left many lasting effects on the whole region.

The war happened because the country of Zaire was in a hard state. The leader, Mobutu Sese Seko, had ruled for a very long time. His government was weak and did not have much money. The national army was also in bad shape. Many people in the country did not trust the government. These problems made it easy for rebel groups to grow.

Things became much harder after a sad event in the neighbor country, Rwanda. In 1994, a genocide happened in Rwanda. This caused about 1.5 million people to flee into eastern Zaire.

Some of these people were fighters who wanted to cause more trouble. They set up camps and attacked groups living in Zaire. This created a big security problem for the area.

In 1996, Rwanda invaded eastern Zaire to stop these groups.

Other countries like Uganda, Burundi, Angola, and Eritrea also joined the fight. A group of rebels called the AFDL formed to fight Mobutu. They were led by a man named Laurent-Désiré Kabila. He had been an opponent of Mobutu for many years. The rebel group grew quickly with support from many people.

By May 1997, Mobutu's government fell and Kabila became the new leader.

Kabila renamed the country the Democratic Republic of the Congo. However, the peace did not last very long. Kabila soon had disagreements with his former allies from Rwanda and Uganda. This tension led directly to the Second Congo War in 1998.
