An investigative journalist is a writer who looks for hidden truths. They often study secrets that leaders or governments try to keep quiet. Hersh has spent many years writing about important events in history. His work helps people understand what is really happening in the world. He is known for being very brave in his reporting. He often talks to people who want to share secrets but must stay anonymous. This means they do not give their real names to the public.

To find these stories, Hersh uses a special way of working. He does not just read official reports from the government. Instead, he goes out to meet people directly. In the past, he even walked out of formal meetings at the Pentagon. He would find officers in their lunch halls to ask them questions. He also travels to find witnesses who saw things with their own eyes. By talking to many different people, he can piece together a true story. This careful method helps him uncover facts that others might miss.

Hersh was born in Chicago, Illinois, on April 8, 1937. His parents moved to the United States from Lithuania and Poland. As a teenager, he helped run his family's dry cleaning shop. He studied history at the University of Chicago and graduated in 1958. Before he became a famous writer, he worked as a salesman. He also worked at a news bureau in Chicago as a crime reporter. He even served as a soldier in the Army reserves for a short time. These early jobs helped him learn how to find and tell stories.

One of his most famous stories happened in 1969.

He reported on the My Lai massacre during the Vietnam War. This was a very sad event where U.S. soldiers killed many unarmed civilians. Hersh interviewed many witnesses to find the truth about what happened. For this work, he won the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 1970. He also wrote about the Watergate scandal for The New York Times. In 2004, he wrote about the abuse of prisoners in Iraq.

He has won five George Polk Awards for his reporting.

Many of the things Hersh writes about are connected to how we see the news today. His work changed how newspapers cover wars and government actions. Before his reports, many newspapers only shared what official leaders told them. Now, journalists feel more freedom to investigate and ask hard questions. Even though some people criticize his use of secret sources, his stories remain very important. He has written 11 books about history and power.
