He focuses on the politics of the Holocaust and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. His work often looks at how history and power work together. He is known for being a very bold researcher. Many people find his writing style to be quite strong. He wants to find the truth through deep study. This makes him a very famous and sometimes controversial figure.

His research often follows a very careful path. He calls himself a "forensic" scholar. This means he looks for small details to prove facts. He often checks if other writers used the right information. He looks at old records to see if they are true. For example, he studied how people used history in books. He wants to make sure that facts are not changed. This way of working helps him find mistakes in other studies.

Finkelstein's interest in history started with his own family. He was born in New York City on December 8, 1953. His parents were Jewish survivors of the Holocaust.
