Robert Fogel was a famous American economic historian. He was born in New York City in 1926. His parents came from Ukraine. He loved history and literature when he was young. Later, he decided to study economics. He wanted to understand how the world works. He used math and numbers to study the past. This special way of doing history is called cliometrics.

Fogel used data to answer big questions. One big question was about railroads in America. Many people thought railroads were the only reason the country grew. Fogel studied the numbers from the year 1890. He compared the real economy to a fake one. In this fake economy, there were no railroads. He found that wagons and canals could still move goods. He showed that railroads were helpful but not the only way.

Fogel also studied the history of slavery. This was a very hard and serious topic. In 1974, he wrote a book called Time on the Cross. He and Stanley Engerman used records to study slave farms. They found that slavery was profitable for the owners. This was a new idea that many people argued about. Later, Fogel wrote more about the cruelty of slavery. He showed how it was an unfair system.

He also looked at how human bodies changed over time. He called this technophysio evolution. This means that new tools and better health worked together. He noticed that people were getting taller and living longer. He found that better food was the main reason for this. Better nutrition helped people stay healthy and fight diseases. This helped the population grow very large.

Robert Fogel won many great honors in his life. He won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1993. He worked at many famous schools like Harvard and the University of Chicago. He taught many students who became great historians too. He died in 2013 at the age of 86. His work helps us see how money and health shape our world.
