He spent his life studying how people and nature live together. He was a social theorist, an author, and a teacher. He also worked as an orator and a historian. Bookchin was a pioneer in the green movement. His ideas helped shape how people think about the environment today. He believed that we must care for society and nature at the same time.

His main idea was called social ecology. This theory looks at how human society affects the natural world. He thought that social problems and environmental problems were linked. He also talked about a way of living called decentralization. This means letting small, local groups make their own decisions. He wanted to move away from huge, central powers. This way, people could live in a more democratic way. He believed technology could help people work less and live better.

Bookchin was a self-taught learner. This means he did not attend a college to learn his subjects. He was born in New York City in 1921. His parents, Nathan and Rose, were immigrants from the Russian Empire. His father was from Mazyr and his mother was from Vilnius.

He grew up in the Bronx with his mother and grandmother. His grandmother shared many important ideas about people helping one another.

He wrote many famous books during his long career. One book was titled Our Synthetic Environment, published in 1962. He also wrote The Ecology of Freedom in 1982. Another important book was called Urbanization Without Cities in 1987. In 1971, he published Post-Scarcity Anarchism. He lived in New York and later moved to Burlington, Vermont. In 1974, he helped create the Institute for Social Ecology. He worked as a professor at Ramapo College in New Jersey too.

Many different groups use his ideas today. His work influenced the New Left and the anti-nuclear movement. It also helped the anti-globalization movement and Occupy Wall Street. Some groups in North and East Syria use his ideas too. Later in life, he called his new ideas "communalism." He wanted to combine different ways of thinking to help everyone. Bookchin died in 2006 at the age of 85. His work continues to inspire people who love nature and democracy.
