He was also an activist who worked for political change. He is well known for his many books and his work in social movements. People often look to his ideas to understand how money, power, and jobs work. He wanted to help people see the world in new ways.

Graeber grew up in a family that cared deeply about politics in New York City. His father, Kenneth, was a driver in a medical unit during the Spanish Civil War. His mother, Ruth, worked in a factory and was in a famous theater group.

David learned about being active in his community at a very young age. By age 16, he had become an anarchist, which is a way of thinking about freedom. He studied hard and eventually went to the University of Chicago to learn more about people.

To learn about different cultures, Graeber traveled to a place called Madagascar. He spent 20 months doing research in a rural area called the Betafo District.

There, he studied how magic, politics, and history affected the people living there. This research helped him earn his doctorate in 1996. He later wrote a book called "Lost People" about what he learned in Madagascar. These studies helped him become a respected expert in his field.

Graeber's career had some very difficult moments in the United States. He worked as a professor at Yale University for several years. However, in 2005, the university decided not to renew his contract.

Many people felt this was unfair and signed petitions to help him. Because he could not find a new job in America, he moved to England. He taught at Goldsmiths' College and later at the London School of Economics.

Even though he moved, Graeber stayed very busy writing and leading. He wrote "Debt: The First 5,000 Years" about how money and debt connect to society. He also wrote about "bullshit jobs," which are jobs that people feel are not useful.
