Ha-Joon Chang is a well-known economist from South Korea. An economist is someone who studies how money, trade, and resources work in the world.

He was born on October 7, 1963. He studied at Seoul National University before moving to England. There, he earned his MPhil and PhD from the University of Cambridge. He taught at Cambridge for many years from 1990 to 2021. Now, he is a professor at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.

Chang focuses on a special area called institutional economics. This study looks at how history and social rules shape how money is used.

He worked with a famous economist named Robert Rowthorn. Together, they looked at industrial policy. Chang describes this as a middle way. It sits between a system where the government plans everything and a system with no rules at all. He believes that the history of a place matters for its future wealth. This way of thinking helps us understand how different countries grow.

One of his most famous books is called Kicking Away the Ladder. It was published in 2002 and won a special prize in 2003.

In this book, Chang shares a big idea about history. He says that rich countries used certain rules to help themselves get wealthy. Once they were successful, they told poorer countries they could not use those same rules. He calls this "ladder-kicking." He believes this makes it very hard for developing nations to escape poverty. He even criticized groups like the World Bank for this practice.

Not everyone agrees with everything Chang says.

A professor named Douglas Irwin said Chang did not look at enough countries in his study. Another expert named William Easterly also had different views on Chang's work. Chang answered these critics by explaining his own research. He argued that countries that followed free market rules often failed to grow. He also said that government help sometimes works better than having no rules at all. Because of his ideas, Prospect magazine named him a top World Thinker in 2013.

Chang has written many other interesting books for people to read. In 2008, he wrote Bad Samaritans about the history of capitalism. In 2011, he released 23 Things They Don't Tell You About Capitalism. This book looks at how we can make the economy work better for everyone. He also wrote Economics: The User's Guide in 2014 to help the general public.

He has worked as a consultant for the United Nations and the World Bank. His work helps us think about how to make the world a fairer place.
