Ha-Joon Chang is a famous economist from South Korea. An economist is a person who studies money and trade. He studied at Seoul National University. Later, he studied at the University of Cambridge in England. He taught there for many years. Now, he teaches at a school called SOAS in London.

Chang writes many books. One very famous book is called Kicking Away the Ladder. In this book, he shares a big idea. He says rich countries used special rules to get wealthy. Then, those same countries told poor countries not to use those rules. He calls this "ladder-kicking." He thinks this makes it hard for poor places to grow.

Some people do not agree with him. A professor named Douglas Irwin said Chang did not look at enough facts. Another expert named William Easterly also had different views. But Chang answered them. He said his ideas help make the world fairer. He has worked with big groups like the United Nations. He also works to help people stay out of poverty.
