He is a professor at Columbia University in New York. He also teaches students from the École Polytechnique and Sciences Po Paris. Stiglitz is known as a New Keynesian economist. This means he studies how the economy behaves in the real world. He wants to understand how to make the global economy fairer for everyone. His work helps people understand why some societies are very unequal.

Much of his work looks at how information works in a market. He studies something called asymmetric information. This happens when one person knows more than another person in a deal. For example, a bank might not know everything about a person asking for a loan. This lack of facts can stop markets from working perfectly. He also studied how to stop workers from being lazy. He helped create the Shapiro-Stiglitz model about efficiency wages.

This model shows how paying higher wages can help a company work better.

Stiglitz has had a very busy career in many different places. He was born in Gary, Indiana, to a Jewish family. He studied at Amherst College and later at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He spent time as a researcher at the University of Cambridge in England. He also taught at Yale, Stanford, Oxford, and Princeton. In 1997, he became a senior vice-president at the World Bank. He later served as a leader for the U.S. Council of Economic Advisers. He even advised President Barack Obama during his time in office.

He has received many big honors for his smart ideas. In 2001, he won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. He shared this prize with George A. Akerlof and A. Michael Spence. They won for their work on how information affects markets. He also won the John Bates Clark Medal in 1979. In 2011, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. He has written many books, including "The Great Divide" and "People, Power, and Profits."

His books help explain how we can improve our world.

Today, Stiglitz continues to work on big problems for the whole planet. He chairs the Brooks World Poverty Institute at the University of Manchester. He also helped lead a group to change how we measure economic success. He thinks the way we use GDP is not always right. He wants to find better ways to measure how people are actually doing. He also works with the United Nations on fixing financial systems.
