William Vickrey was a famous teacher of economics. Economics is the study of how money and resources work. He was born in Victoria, British Columbia, in 1914. His father was a minister named Charles Vernon Vickrey. His mother was named Ada Eliza Spencer. The family moved to New York City when William was a child.

He grew up to be a very smart thinker. He studied math at Yale University and finished his degree in 1935. Later, he went to Columbia University in New York. He finished his PhD there in 1948. His long paper was about how to make taxes fair.

William used math to solve tricky problems about how people act. He used something called game theory to study auctions. An auction is when people bid money to buy things. He created a special kind of auction called the Vickrey auction. This helped people understand how to make fair rules for buying and selling.

He also studied congestion pricing. This is a way to price roads or services. It helps when too many people want to use the same thing at once. This idea was even used in London to help manage traffic. It tells people when a service is getting too full.

He also had big ideas about how cities should be run. Vickrey thought about how to pay for things like water and buses. He believed in something called marginal cost pricing. This means setting prices based on how much it costs to provide a service right now.

He also argued for a land value tax. He thought cities should tax the value of the land itself. He believed this would make cities work much better. He thought it would be fairer than taxing the things people build on the land. This idea was influenced by thinkers like Henry George.

During World War II, William did important work for the government. He worked for the U.S. National Resources Planning Board. He also worked for the Treasury Department in the United States. Later, he helped with land reform in Japan while working under General MacArthur.

He spent his entire teaching career at Columbia University. Many students learned from him there. He was a very active part of the world of economics. He even helped start a group for people who studied land rules. He was a member of the Quaker faith.

In 1996, William received a very big honor. He won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. He shared this prize with another researcher named James Mirrlees. They won for their work on how people make choices when they do not have all the facts.

The prize was announced on October 8, 1996. Sadly, William died just three days later. He died from heart failure in Harrison, New York. He was the only person born in British Columbia to win a Nobel Prize. His colleague, C. Lowell Harriss, accepted the prize for him.
