William Vickrey was a famous teacher of economics. Economics is the study of how money and resources work. He was born in Canada. Later, he moved to New York City. He spent his whole career at Columbia University.

William had many big ideas. He studied how people buy things in auctions. An auction is a way to sell items to the highest bidder. He made a new kind of auction. We call it the Vickrey auction. He also studied how to price roads. This helps manage traffic when many people use them at once. This is called congestion pricing.

He also thought about fair taxes. He believed taxing land could help cities work better. He worked to help change land rules in Japan too.

In 1996, William won the Nobel Prize in Economics. This is a very special award for great work. He won it for his research on incentives. An incentive is a reason to act in a certain way. The prize was announced just three days before he died. His friend accepted the award for him.
