An economist is someone who studies how money, trade, and resources work. He is known for being one of the most influential people in his field. Krugman has taught at many top schools like MIT and Princeton. He also works at the City University of New York. He has written many books and over 200 scholarly articles. His work helps us understand how the whole world stays connected through business.

Krugman is best known for something called New Trade Theory.

Before his work, people thought countries only traded if they were very different. For example, one country might trade food for tools. But Krugman showed that similar countries trade with each other too. He explained this using two main ideas. First, he noted that people love having many different choices. Second, he looked at economies of scale. This is a way that big factories save money by making huge amounts of one thing.

These ideas explain why certain things happen in the world. Because of economies of scale, it is not smart to build small factories everywhere. Instead, companies build large factories in just a few specific places.

This helps explain why certain goods come from certain countries. Krugman also studied how the size of a market affects where things are made. He found that the country with the most buyers often produces the most goods. This is a concept known as the home market effect.

Krugman's journey began in New York. He was born in 1953 to a Ukrainian Jewish family. As a young boy, he loved reading science fiction novels by Isaac Asimov. These stories about the future actually inspired him to study economics. He went to Yale University and later earned his PhD from MIT. In 1976, he even worked for the Central Bank of Portugal.

These many years of study helped him build a great career.

In 2008, Krugman reached a huge milestone. He won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.

This prize is one of the highest honors in the world. For many years, he also wrote columns for The New York Times. He recently started a daily newsletter on Substack to reach his readers. His wife, Robin Wells, helps him as his editor. Even today, hundreds of thousands of people read his work every day.
