An economist studies how money, resources, and trade function within societies. Krugman is a Distinguished Professor of Economics at the City University of New York. He has also held prestigious positions at MIT, Princeton University, and the London School of Economics. His work spans academic research, textbooks, and public commentary. He is widely recognized for explaining how global trade and economic geography operate.

Krugman is most famous for developing New Trade Theory.

Before his research, economists used older models to explain trade. Those models suggested that countries only trade if they have very different resources. For example, one nation might trade crops for another nation's metal. However, modern trade often happens between countries that are very similar. Krugman developed a way to explain why these similar nations trade with one another.

His theory relies on two specific economic mechanisms. The first is a preference for diversity among consumers. People generally want many different brands and types of goods to choose from. The second mechanism is called economies of scale. This refers to the cost advantages that large companies gain by producing goods in massive quantities. By producing more, the cost of making each individual item goes down. These two forces together explain why trade patterns look the way they do.

These mechanisms lead to specific results in the real world. Because of economies of scale, it is not efficient to build small factories everywhere. Instead, production often concentrates in a few large locations. This creates a pattern where certain goods are made in specific regions. Krugman also identified the home market effect. This concept states that a country with high demand for a product will likely produce a large share of it. This country then becomes a major exporter to the rest of the world.

Krugman's path to these discoveries began with a childhood interest in science fiction.

He was inspired by the novels of Isaac Asimov. These books featured a science called "psychohistory" used to understand society. Krugman saw economics as a real-world way to study social patterns. He earned his BA from Yale University in 1974. He later completed his PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1977. During his studies, he even worked for the Central Bank of Portugal.

In 2008, Krugman received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.

The Nobel Prize is one of the highest honors a scientist can receive. The committee recognized him for his work on international trade and economic geography. He showed how consumer preferences and scale affect where economic activity happens. His research helped move geographical analysis into the center of mainstream economics. This work remains a foundation for many modern economic models.

Beyond his research, Krugman is a prolific writer and commentator. He has authored or edited 27 books and published over 200 scholarly articles. For over two decades, he was a columnist for The New York Times.

He recently transitioned to a daily newsletter on Substack. This newsletter reaches hundreds of thousands of readers per post. His wife, economist Robin Wells, serves as his editor. Through his writing, Krugman continues to discuss important topics like taxation and international finance.
