He is also a presenter on radio and television. He grew up in a home with very little money. His parents were Quakers who lived in Kendal. They worked in factories and as weavers. Because money was tight, Starkey learned the value of it early on. He also faced hard health challenges as a child. He had to have surgery for club feet and suffered from polio. These early years shaped the man he became.

Starkey worked very hard in school to succeed. He won prizes for debating and acted in school plays. He went to Cambridge University on a special scholarship. At Fitzwilliam College, he earned a first-class degree and a PhD. He became an expert on the Tudor period. His main focus was the household of King Henry VIII. He studied under a famous expert named Sir Geoffrey Elton. This training helped him start a long career as a historian.

His career moved from teaching to the television screen. He taught at the London School of Economics for thirty years. He left teaching in 1998 because he felt bored with office work. Instead, he began making many history documentaries. In 2002, he signed a huge £2 million contract with Channel 4. He made shows about English kings and queens. One famous series was called Monarchy. People enjoyed watching his shows about the Tudors and Elizabeth I.

Starkey is known for having a very sharp way of speaking. Some people even called him "the rudest man in Britain." He often spoke on a radio program called The Moral Maze. He was also a regular guest on the show Question Time. Sometimes his words caused big arguments. In June 2020, he made a comment that people said was racist. He apologized for what he said. However, he lost many honors and jobs because of it. This included his fellowship at Fitzwilliam College.

He also has very strong ideas about politics. He used to support the Labour Party many years ago. Now, he holds conservative views. He admires a leader named Benjamin Disraeli.
