He was an American lawyer and a writer. He also worked as a businessman and a philosopher. Spooner had many strong ideas about how people should live. He believed in the rights of each person. He was part of a group called the Boston anarchists. This group thought people could rule themselves without a big government. His many writings helped shape new political ideas. These ideas are still studied by people today.

Spooner wanted to make things fairer for everyone. In his early career, he worked as a lawyer in Massachusetts. At that time, the law was different for different people. College graduates only had to study law for three years. People without a college degree had to study for five years. Spooner thought this was unfair to poor people. He started practicing law after only three years. He wanted to show that the law should not favor the rich. The state eventually changed this rule in 1836.

He also started a new way to send mail. In 1844, he began the American Letter Mail Company. The government Post Office was the only other choice then. However, the Post Office charged very high prices. Spooner's company had offices in cities like New York and Philadelphia.

Workers carried letters in handbags on trains and steamboats. This competition helped lower mail costs from 5 cents to 3 cents. Eventually, a new law in 1851 stopped his business.

Spooner is very famous for his work to end slavery. He was a leader in the abolitionist movement. In 1845, he wrote a book called "The Unconstitutionality of Slavery." Some people thought the Constitution allowed slavery to exist. Spooner used legal arguments to say this was not true. He argued that the law did not support human servitude. He campaigned against slavery until the Civil War began in 1861. He wanted all people to be free and treated fairly.

Many of his ideas lasted long after he died. Spooner died on May 14, 1887, in Boston. He was 79 years old.
