He was an economist, a historian, and a political theorist. He also worked as an activist for his ideas. Rothbard was a very important leader in the libertarian movement. This movement focuses on personal freedom and limited government. He is best known for helping start a theory called anarcho-capitalism. This idea suggests that private businesses could provide services usually run by the state.

Rothbard had many strong beliefs about how the world should work. He argued that the government was too large and powerful. He believed private companies could do jobs more efficiently than the state. For example, he thought the military, police, and courts could be private. He also spoke out against central banking and certain types of banking. Rothbard believed that nations should not interfere in the affairs of other countries. He wanted to see a world based on individual rights and free markets.

His journey into these ideas began with his education and mentors. Rothbard was born to Jewish immigrants from Poland and Russia. He studied at Columbia University in New York City. He earned a degree in math in 1945 and a PhD in economics in 1956. During his studies, he was heavily influenced by Ludwig von Mises. Mises was a famous economist from the Austrian School.

Rothbard attended Mises's seminars to learn more about economic theory. He even wrote a textbook to help others understand Mises's work.

Throughout his life, Rothbard built many important organizations. In the 1970s, he worked with Charles Koch to found the Cato Institute.

She was his close adviser and helped him edit his many books. He taught economics at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and later at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Rothbard's ideas often put him at odds with other famous thinkers. He was a critic of people like Milton Friedman and Ayn Rand. While he admired Rand's work on natural rights, they disagreed on many things. He also had different views than the mainstream academic world. Even so, he attracted many students and followers who shared his views. His writings helped shape the modern libertarian movement. Today, people still study his books to understand his unique way of looking at freedom.
