Antonio Negri was a famous Italian political philosopher.

He spent much of his life studying how power works. He was born in Padua, Italy, in 1933. His father was a communist activist from Bologna. This early connection to political ideas shaped his life. Negri became a professor at the University of Padua. There, he taught state doctrine, which is the study of laws. He also helped found a group called Potere Operaio in 1969. This group focused on the power of workers in society.

In the late 1970s, Negri became part of a major controversy. Some people accused him of leading a violent group called the Red Brigades. They believed he was behind the kidnapping and death of Aldo Moro in 1978. Negri was arrested in April 1979 on several serious charges. While many of these charges were dropped, he still faced legal trouble. He was eventually sentenced to 30 years in prison. The court also held him responsible for other violent acts by activists. This period was a very difficult time in his life.

Negri eventually fled to France to avoid prison. He lived there for 14 years as an exile. During this time, he taught at schools in Paris. He worked alongside other famous thinkers like Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault.

Even while living away from Italy, he remained very active. He wrote many influential books while he was in exile. In 1997, he returned to Italy to serve his remaining sentence. He hoped this would help other people in similar situations. He was finally released from prison in 2003.

Negri is best known for his many books on politics. One of his most famous works is titled Empire. He wrote this book with another thinker named Michael Hardt.

In this book, they describe a new kind of global power. They say the world has moved past individual nations. Instead, they argue that a global system called Empire now rules. This system includes groups like the United Nations and NATO. They also look at how people can resist such power. Their ideas changed how many people think about the world.

People have very different opinions about Antonio Negri. Some famous philosophers supported him during his legal battles. They wondered if he was being punished just for being a thinker. However, others had much harsher views of him. For example, an Italian president once called him a dangerous person. His life shows how complex politics and ideas can be. He lived in Venice and Paris later in his life. He passed away in December 2023. His work continues to be studied by many today.
