He was a professor at the University of Padua. He taught people about how states and laws work. Negri also helped start a group called Potere Operaio. This group focused on the power of workers.

In the late 1970s, Negri faced serious legal trouble. Some people accused him of being a leader for a violent group. They said he was involved in the kidnapping and death of a leader named Aldo Moro. Negri was arrested in 1979. Most of those charges were dropped later. However, he was sentenced to prison for his role in other violent acts.

Negri fled to France to stay safe. He taught at schools in Paris for many years. He wrote many important books while he was away. One famous book is called Empire. He wrote it with Michael Hardt. It looks at how power works in the whole world today. People have very different views of him. Some thinkers supported him. Others thought his ideas were dangerous. He lived in Venice and Paris later in life.
