He is best known for helping to create the National Health Service. This system makes sure people can see doctors without paying at the time. He was born on 15 November 1897 in Tredegar, Wales. This was a mining town where most people worked in coal mines. His father was a miner and his mother was a seamstress. Growing up in a working-class family shaped his ideas about fairness.

Nye's life was full of hard work from a young age. He left school when he was only 14 years old. He worked as a butcher's boy before starting in the coal mines. At age 19, he was already the head of his local Miners' Lodge. He often spoke out against the people who ran the mines. He also studied at the Central Labour College in London. There, he learned about economics, politics, and history to help his cause.

Bevan became a famous politician after many years of activism. He was first elected as a Member of Parliament for Ebbw Vale in 1929. He served in Parliament for 31 years in total. In the House of Commons, he was a very strong voice. He often criticized leaders like Winston Churchill and David Lloyd George. He wanted to make sure the government looked after working people. He was a key figure in the Labour Party for a long time.

After the Second World War, Bevan became the Minister of Health. He was 47 years old when he joined the cabinet. He was inspired by the Tredegar Medical Aid Society from his home. He led a campaign to create a health service for everyone. The National Health Service Act was passed in 1946. The service officially launched in 1948 and took over 2,500 hospitals. This changed how medical care worked across the whole United Kingdom.

Bevan's work helped build what is called the welfare state. This is a system where the government helps people with many needs. Even after he left his main roles, his followers were called "Bevanites." He served as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party in 1959. He died from stomach cancer in 1960 at the age of 62. Many people in the country felt great sadness when he died. In 2004, he was voted as the first on a list of 100 Welsh Heroes.
