He was born in a small Scottish village called Hill of Fearn. His family did not have much money. Because of this, he had to leave school early to help them. He tried to learn how to be a carpenter. However, his eyesight became very poor. This made it hard for him to do that job. Later in life, he could not read well. He had to ask people to read documents out loud to him.

After the war ended, Fraser helped New Zealand work with other nations. This helped the country become more important in the world. He led the Labour Party to many election wins. Even so, things were hard after the war. There were many shortages of things people needed. This made the government less popular with the people. In 1949, the National Party won the election. Fraser's time as leader was over. He died from a heart attack in 1950. He was 66 years old.
