He is a literary critic and a theorist. A critic studies books and how they are written. A theorist looks at the big ideas behind art. Many experts call him a very important person in this field. He is known for being a major voice in the English-speaking world. His work helps us see how stories and art connect to the world around us.

Eagleton works by looking at the hidden meanings in books. He often uses a way of thinking called Marxism. This means he looks at how power and money affect what people write. He also uses ideas from Christianity to guide his thoughts. In his famous book, he shows that all literary theory is political. This means that no one can look at art without having a point of view. He believes we cannot separate art from the way our society works.

His journey began in Salford, Lancashire, in 1943. He grew up in a working-class Catholic family. As a young boy, he served as an altar boy at a local convent. He went to school at De La Salle College in Pendleton. Later, he studied English at Trinity College, Cambridge. He was a very successful student there. He even became the youngest fellow at Jesus College, Cambridge, since the 1700s.

Eagleton has written more than forty books in his career. His most famous book is titled Literary Theory: An Introduction. It was published in 1983 and has sold over 750,000 copies. He taught at many great places like the University of Oxford and the University of Manchester. He even gave special lectures at Yale University in 2008. In July 2024, Lancaster University gave him an Honorary Doctorate to celebrate his work.

His ideas link many different parts of life together. He connects literature to politics, religion, and even ethics. He has written about how people think about God and faith. He even shared his views on how football can distract people from important social issues. By studying books, he helps us understand how to live well together. He wants us to think about what is right and how we can improve our world.
