He spent his life studying how books and stories work. People call this job literary criticism. A critic is someone who explains art to others. Frye was one of the most influential people in this field. He wanted to understand the deep patterns in all writing. His work helped many people see how stories connect to each other.

Frye had a very specific way of looking at books. He believed that studying literature could be like a science. Instead of just saying if a book was good or bad, he wanted to find its structure. He looked for an "order of words" in all great writing. He thought that literature was not just a pile of random books. Instead, it was a connected system that used shared ideas. This method helped people see the big picture of human storytelling.

His journey into this work began with a famous book. In 1947, he published a book called Fearful Symmetry.

Before this, many people did not understand the poems of William Blake. Some even thought Blake's poems were just confusing ramblings. Frye showed that the poems actually used a deep system of symbols. This discovery made him famous all over the world. It opened the door for his later, even bigger ideas.

Frye lived a very busy and important life. He was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, in 1912. He grew up in Moncton, New Brunswick. He studied philosophy and theology at the University of Toronto. Later, he studied at Merton College in Oxford. He spent most of his career as a professor at the University of Toronto. He even served as a professor at Harvard University in 1974. He died in 1991 in Toronto, Ontario.

One of his biggest ideas was about archetypes. An archetype is a common pattern or symbol found in many myths. Frye believed that stories are like a "displaced mythology." This means that modern books still use the same patterns as very old tales. These patterns help stories keep their meaning through many years. He believed these ideas come from the human imagination. By studying these patterns, we can better understand the world of stories.
