He spent his life studying how books and stories work. He is known as a literary critic. A critic is someone who studies and explains art.

Frye became famous after he wrote a book about the poet William Blake. Before Frye, many people did not understand Blake's poems. Frye showed that the poems had a deep system of meaning. Later, he wrote a very important book called Anatomy of Criticism. In this book, he shared a new way to study stories.

He believed that studying literature could be like a science. He thought we could find patterns in all books.

Frye called these patterns archetypes. These are common ideas or symbols found in many myths and tales. He felt that stories are like a big web. One story connects to another through these shared patterns. He taught at the University of Toronto for most of his life. He also taught at Harvard University. His big ideas still help people understand the power of the imagination today.
