They study many big ideas like gender, politics, and ethics. Their work helps people understand how identity works in our world. Butler has also written about war, non-violence, and democratic theory. They are a major figure in feminist and queer theory. This means they study how society views gender and sexual identity. Their ideas influence many different subjects, including literary theory and psychoanalysis.

One of Butler's most famous ideas is called gender performativity. They suggest that gender is not a fixed thing we are born with. Instead, gender is something we do through our repeated actions.

Think of it like a ritual that happens every day. We follow certain social rules through our behavior and speech. Butler argues that these acts create the appearance of a stable identity. Because these acts can be changed, there is room for people to express themselves in new ways.

Butler's journey into big ideas started when they were young. They were born on February 24, 1956, in Cleveland, Ohio. Their family was of Hungarian-Jewish and Russian-Jewish descent. When they were 14, they took special ethics classes at Hebrew school. These classes were actually a way to manage how much Butler talked in class!

Butler found these lessons very exciting. They began asking deep questions about philosophy and theology during this time.

After their early studies, Butler went to many famous universities. They studied at Bennington College and then moved to Yale University. At Yale, they earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1978 and a PhD in 1984. They also spent a year as a Fulbright Scholar at Heidelberg University. Butler has taught at Wesleyan, George Washington, and Johns Hopkins universities. Now, they are a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. They also hold a special chair at the European Graduate School.

Butler has written several books that changed how people think. Their book *Gender Trouble* was published in 1990 and sold over 100,000 copies. They also wrote *Bodies That Matter* in 1993 to explain their ideas more deeply. These books look at how power shapes our understanding of being a woman. Butler also speaks out for LGBTQIA rights around the world. Their work connects many different ideas about how we live together in society.
