Making this film was a very hard job. It was filmed between 1943 and early 1945. During this time, Germany was occupying France. This means the country was under the control of an enemy power. The creators had to work under these war conditions. The writer, Jacques Prévert, even used a clever trick to include a criminal character. He knew the leaders would not let him make a movie about a criminal. So, he put the criminal inside a movie about a mime instead.

The movie uses real people from French history as inspiration. Baptiste the mime was based on a real man named Baptiste Deburau. Frédérick was based on an acclaimed actor from the "Boulevard of Crime." Even the criminal, Lacenaire, was a real person from the 1820s and 1830s. The film shows the Funambules theater, which specialized in pantomime. Because of strict rules, this theater could not use spoken words. Instead, the actors had to tell stories using only their bodies and faces.

The title of the film has a special meaning for theater fans. In French, the word "paradis" refers to the highest balcony in a theater. This is where the cheapest seats are located. The people sitting there are often called "the gods." These audience members are known for being loud and honest. They cheer and react loudly to the plays. The title suggests the movie is for both the actors and these wonderful, working-class people.
