Jean Vigo was a famous film maker from France. He helped start a style called poetic realism. This style used real life and dream-like scenes. He made four films in his short life. One film was a short movie about a swimmer. Another film was about life in the town of Nice. His most famous film was L'Atalante. It tells a story about a newly married couple. The movie mixes real life with beautiful, dream-like parts.

His movies were not big hits at first. The French government even banned one of his films. He became very sick with tuberculosis. This is a sickness that affects the lungs. He died in 1934 when he was only 29 years old. Even though he died young, his work stayed important. Many people think his films are some of the best ever made. Today, people give out the Prix Jean Vigo award. This prize honors great film makers in France. His daughter, Luce Vigo, became a film critic too.
