Maurice Pialat was a famous film director from France.

He wanted to be a painter first. But he did not find much success with that. At age 16, he got a camera. He began making short films and documentaries. He did not make his first big movie until he was 43. This movie was called L'enfance nue. A famous director named François Truffaut helped make it. That film won a prize called the Prix Jean Vigo.

Pialat made ten major films during his long career. His movies often felt very real. They showed the lives of ordinary people. He used long takes, which means the camera stays still for a long time. He also used a style called naturalism. This means his stories felt like real life. In 1987, he won a big prize at the Cannes Film Festival. He won it for his film Under the Sun of Satan.

Pialat was also an actor. He acted in some of his own movies. He worked with the actor Gérard Depardieu in four different films. People still study his work today. They say he changed how movies are made in France.
