He was known for making many movies over a fifty-year career. He often made thrillers, which are stories filled with suspense and mystery. People admired his skill and how precisely he used the language of film. Some called him a master craftsman of his movement.

Chabrol's journey into movies started very early in his life. He grew up in a village called Sardent. As a young boy, he even ran a film club in a barn! He loved detective stories and popular fiction. Later, he moved to Paris to study at the Sorbonne. While in the city, he joined film clubs and met future famous directors. These included Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut. He even worked as a film projectionist while serving in the army.

Before he directed his own movies, Chabrol was a film critic. He wrote for an important magazine called Cahiers du Cinéma. He used his writing to talk about how movies should look and feel. He believed in using realistic styles and deep focus photography. This technique helps bring the viewer closer to the action on screen. He also helped his friends by providing money for their early films. Because he supported so many people, some call him the "godfather" of the French New Wave.

His career as a director began in 1958 with a film called Le Beau Serge. He used money from his wife's family to fund this first big project. The movie was a huge success and won awards at festivals. It was the first film of the French New Wave movement. He followed this with another hit called Les Cousins in 1958. That film also won a big prize at the Berlin International Film Festival. These early successes helped him build a very long career.

Chabrol's work is often linked to the style of director Alfred Hitchcock. He loved suspense and sometimes made movies that felt like private jokes. He worked with many talented people throughout his life. One famous actress he worked with often was Stéphane Audran. He also discovered the actress Isabelle Huppert in 1978. Even though his movies could be complex, he remained very popular. He made almost one film every year until he passed away in 2010.
