Rivette had a very unique way of making his movies. He often used improvisation, which means actors make up parts of the story. He liked to let events happen naturally on the camera. This made his films feel very real and loose. Because of this, his movies were often very long. One of his films, Out 1, lasted for thirteen hours!

He grew up in a family where everyone worked as pharmacists. His father was a painter who loved the opera. When he was young, Rivette watched cartoons at a cinema next to his home. He knew that Paris was the only place to truly succeed.

In Paris, Rivette spent a lot of time at the Cinémathèque Française. This was a place where he could watch many old films. He met many famous friends there, like François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard. They would sit in the front row together during screenings. In 1956, he made a short film called Le Coup du Berger. This film was very important to his group of friends. Truffaut said that this film helped inspire others to start making their own movies. It was a big step for the whole New Wave movement.

Rivette made twenty-nine films throughout his long life.
