Strategic bombing is a type of military attack from the air. It uses bombers, long-range missiles, or fighter-bomber aircraft to hit targets. These targets are chosen because they are vital to an enemy's ability to fight a war. The goal is to destroy an enemy's economic ability to make and move supplies. It can also aim to destroy the morale of the people. Morale is the spirit or hope of a group of people.

This strategy works by targeting the things that keep a country running. Instead of just fighting soldiers on a battlefield, it hits factories or transport paths. Some leaders believed this would make people want peace more quickly. They thought that constant destruction would cause a country to collapse. This is sometimes called terror bombing when it hits civilian targets. This term is used when attacks aim to frighten a population into surrendering.

People began using these tactics during World War I. In 1914, German Zeppelins, which were large airships, bombed the Belgian city of Liège. This was the first time a city was bombed from the air. Later that year, the Royal Naval Air Service tried to hit Zeppelin factories. They used four aircraft to attack sheds in Cologne and Düsseldorf. By the end of the war, 51 Zeppelin raids had happened against England. These raids caused minor damage to production but caused great fear.

During World War II, strategic bombing became much larger and more intense. In March 1945, a massive firebombing attack hit Tokyo. This single raid killed around 100,000 civilians and cut industrial work in half. In Europe, the Allies used different names for their raids. The Royal Air Force used the term "area bombing." The United States Army Air Forces often called their missions "precision bombing." However, weather often made it very hard to be precise.

Living through these attacks required many different defensive measures. People used air raid shelters to stay safe from falling bombs. Cities also used blackouts by turning off all lights at night. This made it much harder for pilots to see their targets. Some countries even moved their most important factories into tunnels underground. They also built "shadow factories" to make more supplies. Some even set up fake targets in the countryside to trick bombers.
