Reichelt wanted to help pilots stay safe. He invented a special suit. This suit could turn into a parachute. It used silk and rods to help it open. He called it a "parachute-suit."

He tested his ideas by dropping dolls. At first, the dolls landed safely. But the wearable suit was much harder to make work. Reichelt believed he needed a very high place to test it. He asked for permission to use the Eiffel Tower.

In 1912, he finally got permission. He planned to use dolls for the test. However, Reichelt decided to jump himself. He wanted to prove his invention worked.

His friends tried to stop him. They worried about the wind. A man named Gaston Hervieu also had concerns. He thought the suit needed more time to open.

On February 4, 1912, Reichelt went to the tower. He jumped from the first platform. The suit did not open fully. Sadly, Reichelt died from the fall. His story became famous in the news.
