He built many gliders. One glider was called the Hawk. He used it to set a world record for distance. His sister, Ella, helped him. She stitched the fabric for the wings.

Pilcher wanted to build a plane with an engine. He built a triplane. This means it had three wings stacked on top of each other. This design helped create lift. Lift is the force that pushes an aircraft up into the air.

In 1899, Pilcher planned to fly his new plane. But the engine had a problem. He decided to fly his Hawk glider instead. It had been raining. The water made the wing fabric shrink. This put too much strain on the bamboo frame. The tail snapped in mid-air.

Pilcher crashed and died from his injuries.

Later, experts studied his plans. They found his triplane design was very good. It might have worked well. He was a true pioneer of flight.
