Percy Pilcher was a British inventor who dreamed of flight.

He lived during the late nineteenth century. This was a time when people were just starting to learn how to fly. Pilcher was a leader in testing unpowered flight. He spent many years building and testing different gliders. His work helped people understand how wings could carry weight. He was a very important pioneer in the history of aviation.

Pilcher learned how to make wings produce lift. Lift is the force that pushes an aircraft up. He talked with a German expert named Otto Lilienthal. This helped him build gliders like The Bat and The Beetle. He also built a glider called the Hawk. To make the Hawk work, he used a bamboo frame and fabric wings. His sister, Ella, helped by stitching the fabric for the wings.

In 1897, he flew the Hawk for 250 meters. This flight set a new world record for distance.

Pilcher wanted to go even further with powered flight. He worked with an engineer named Walter Gordon Wilson. Together, they tried to build a motor-driven triplane. A triplane is a plane with three wings stacked on top of each other. This design was a smart way to get more lift. Stacking the wings helped carry the heavy engine. However, building this plane was very expensive for him. He even went into a lot of debt to finish his work.

In September 1899, Pilcher planned to show his new plane. He wanted to fly it near Stanford Hall in Leicestershire. But the engine had a broken part that day. He decided to fly the Hawk glider instead to show his guests. It had been raining, so the wing fabric was very wet. The water made the fabric shrink and pull tight.

This put too much strain on the bamboo frame. The tail of the Hawk snapped while he was in the air. He fell 10 meters and died from his injuries two days later.

Many years later, experts studied his old plans. Researchers at Cranfield University looked at his triplane design. They found that his idea was actually very good. They built a replica to see if it could fly. The replica stayed in the air for 85 seconds. This was even longer than the Wright brothers' first flight.

Pilcher is now remembered as a great inventor. He is even in the Scottish Engineering Hall of Fame.
